SELECTION CRITERIA
The Achievement Awards Program was launched at the 11th Annual Reunion and Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on May 25, 2003. It is
designed to give recognition to those alumni members who have made significant
achievement(s) in their professional and academic
pursuits and meaningful contribution to the society and the community in which they live and also to Liberia.
The Program and Planning Committee is now receiving nominations for 2009.
In order for the Committee to select recipients from a representative pool of candidates, all members of CWA-AA USA, Inc. are invited to
submit nominations consistent with the submission guidelines and selection criteria outlined as follows:
REVIEW PROCESS
Please refer to the selection criteria to assist you in selecting potential nominee(s) and preparing your statement. All nominations will
be reviewed by a three-person committee appointed by the Executive Board. The Committee will evaluate the nominations using a
"point-system," making it possible for some nominees to be selected for awards even if they fall short of a criterion. One nominee will be selected from each category to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award for the year.

Each nomination must contain the following information and be in the following form (one nomination per sheet):
* Name, postal address and e-mail (if available) of the submitter.
* Submitter's year(s) of attendance or year of graduation from CWA
* Name, postal address and e-mail (if available) of the nominee.
* Nominee's year(s) of attendance or year of graduation from CWA.
* Category in which the nomination is being submitted (see section criteria categories).
* Typewritten narrative statement of 20 words or less, describing significant achievement(s) and contributions for which the nominee should be
recognized.

SELECTION CRITERIA
I. Scholastic
* Nominee must have graduated with honors, or completed the requirements for graduation with honors, from an accredited graduate,
postgraduate or professional school, within the last 10 years.
* Nominee must have completed course work to earn the degree; and
* attained a comparable grade point average of at least 3.5 out of a possible 4.0; or
* been recognized by the academic institution conferring the conferring the degree as having attained honor status.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, proof of the honor status that
qualifies for the award. Honorary degrees do not qualify for this category, but may serve as the basis for an award in one of the other
categories listed below. Undergraduate and correspondence degree programs do not qualify.
II. Professional
* Nominee must be engaged in an occupation that requires considerable training and specialized study, such as accounting, engineering,
law, medicine, nursing, psychology or the like, as evidenced by his/her acquisition of board certification or license to practice in said
profession.
* Nominee must have been recognized by his/her peers in the profession as having attained a significant milestone or achieved a significant
accomplishment for the betterment of the profession.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, proof of the board certification or
license to practice, and of the peer recognition that qualifies for the award.
III. Education/Academia:
Nominee must be a current retired person in the field of education, who has achieved a significant milestone or made a significant contribution
to the field of education through one or more of the following:
* Mentorship of "at risk" students, which has Made a positive difference in the educational development and life of one or more protégés.
* Publication of scholarly work(s) that his/her peers have juried or otherwise publicly recognized as contributing to the advancement of
education; service as an administrator, demonstrated by his/her development and/or implementation of a program that has advanced or
enhanced the education.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/ her selection, proof of his/her qualification
for the award (i.e. mentorship = written testimonial(s) from protégé(s); publication - documentation of jurying / recognition of contribution;
ad-ministration = written testimonial from impartial third jury that evaluated the program.
IV. Invention / Innovation:
Nominee must have invented a device, process, etc., for which a patent has been granted, or which has been officially recognized as being part
of a major scientific or technological discovery and/or break-through.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, proof of the grant of a patent, or
evidence of the recognition he/she has received for the break-through that qualifies for the award.
V. Politics / Military:
Nominee must be:
* a current or retired high profile elected public official such as a representative, senator, governor, mayor, county executive, or similar post,
who has held office for more than one term or has otherwise served with distinction, as exemplified by his/her reputation in the community and
/ or recognition of achievement;
* a current or retired high profile career military official such as an admiral, general, derivative thereof, or similar post of recognized world
super power, who has served with distinction, as exemplified by his / her military record.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, proof of the reputation,
recognition, or military record that qualifies for the award.
VI. Leadership:
Nominee must be currently serving as the functional leader (i.e., chairman, president, chief executive officer) of:
- a civil rights or human rights organization (i.e., NAACP, Amnesty International, etc.), OR
- a philanthropic or humanitarian relief organization (i.e., Red Cross); OR
- a professional or trade association (i.e., medical, legal, financial, journalism, commerce, etc.); OR
- a consortium of associations (i.e. Liberian Communication Associations, Union of Liberian Associations, etc.)
Nominee must have achieved a significant milestone or made a significant contribution to the advancement of the organization/association
of which he /she serves as the functional leader.
VII. Humanitarian / Philanthropic:
Nominee must be or have been a philanthropist and/or an advocate who has raised international awareness of the plight of, and advocated in
favor of relief for, the suffering people of Liberia in particular and the world in general.
If selected, the nominee must submit within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, proof (i.e., written
testimonials) of the action/contribution that qualifies for the award.
VIII. Athletics:
Nominee must have excelled as a professional athlete in competitive sports, as exemplified by having achieved first place status among the
field of competitors.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, documentary proof of the
accomplishment that qualifies for the award.
IX. The Arts:
Nominee must have excelled in the arts (i.e., theater, cinema, audio, visual, culinary, etc.) or the humanities (i.e., literature, philosophy, etc.)
through work(s) that have promoted to international exposure of the Liberian culture and way of life.
If selected, the nominee must submit, within two weeks following the date of notification of his/her selection, documentary proof of the
accomplishment that qualifies for the award.
