DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP

Mr. Alexander B. Cummings, Jr. (Class of 1973)

 

Alex is an Executive Vice President of the Coca-Cola Company and President of its Africa Group responsible for the company's operations in Africa. Mr. Cummings was made Africa Group President in March 2001 and elected Executive Vice President by the Board of Directors of the Coca-Cola Company in 2002. He has previously held the position of President of the Company's North and West Africa Division responsible for the African countries of Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, in addition to all the countries of Sub-Saharan West and Central Africa from Mauritania to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

 

Outside his role as President of the Coca Cola Company's Africa Group, Mr. Cummings is the Chairman of the Coca Cola Foundation; working toward supporting health and education across Africa. Mr. Cummings is also a Board member of the Africa-America Institute and the Corporate Council on Africa. He formerly served as a board member of the Sabathani Community Organization in Minneapolis, MN.

 

Mr. Cummings holds a B.Sc. degree in Finance and a minor in Economics from North Illinois University and an MBA in Finance from Atlanta University.

 

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

Dr. Wilfred S. Boayue, MD, MPH & TM (Class of 1958)

 

Wilfred, now retired, served the World Health Organization and the Government of Liberia in various capacities:- with the WHO, he served as Team Leader for theWorld Health Organization and Ministry of Health Team that drafted the first National Health Policy for Liberia. He also served as WHO Representative stationed in Zambia (1986-1998), managing the Agency's collaborative health programs with the Zambia Ministry of Health; collaborated with bilateral donors, UN Agencies, World Bank and non-governmental agencies active in the health sector. He also served as WHO Program Coordinator in Liberia (1981-1986).

 

Dr. Boayue served the Government of Liberia as Deputy Minister of Health & Chief Medical Officer (1976-1980); County Public Health Officer and Medical Director, Liberia.

 

He's also Visiting Associate Professor (1999), Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia.

 

Dr. Boayue holds a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana; Intern-ship and Family Practice Residency - Postgraduate Medical Program, Methodist Hospital of Indiana, Indianapolis; Doctor of Medicine, School of Medicine, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV.

 

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Dr. Ophelia I. Weeks (Class of 1968)

 

Ophelia was born in Washington, DC and raised in Monrovia, Liberia, is the second of eight children. She earned a BS in Microbiology from McGill University, Montreal, Canada in 1974; a Ph.D. in Neuroanatomy from Howard University, Washington, DC in 1980; and was a postdoctoral Fellow at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia from 1981-1986. Dr. Weeks is an Associate Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Florida International University (FIU), Miami. She publishes in scientific journals; teaches courses with enrollments annually totalling close to 300 (over 70% female); serves on numerous committees including FIU President's Advisory Committee on Women, Advisory Committee for the Women's Studies Program at FIU, mentoring programs for young women, and has received certificates and awards for teaching, service and mentoring. Dr. Weeks enjoys tennis, golf, travelling and gardening.

 

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP

Mr. David A. Garnett, MBA (Class of 1975)

 

Dave is a graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, MA with a BS in Accounting. He later obtained an MBA in Finance from the same Institution. His activism and public service dates back to when, at the tender age of twelve, he represented Liberia at the Children's International Summer Village Camp in Oslo, Kjevick, Norway. A Former Chair of the True Whig Party Youth Wing, Mr. Garnet served as an Advisor to former LCA President John Lloyd; and chaired the 2000 Constitution Review Commission. Mr. Garnett currently serves as the President of the Liberian Community Association of the Washington, DC Metro Area.

 

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP

Mr. John F. Lloyd (Class of 1985)

 

John has served in various leadership positions within the US-based Liberian Community Association. Mr. Lloyd is former President of the Liberian Community Association of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, former leader of the National Leadership Council of the Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA), and former Chairman of the National Immigration Commission. Mr. Lloyd is also an executive of the NAACP in Washington, DC and a recipient of several leadership awards and citations from recognized local and international entities including the offices of the Governor of Maryland and the Mayor of Baltimore.

 

Mr. Lloyd currently serves as the Vice President of the Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA). John F. Lloyd is one of few Africans highly recognized by members of the United States Congress for his courageous leadership in seeking the passage of legislation on Capitol Hill to attain legal status and work permits for over 15,000 Liberians in the US.
